Few are the Malayalam films that I have seen and of those little remains that is memorable.
However, I have my cousin-in-laws to thank for sending over a bunch of films from Kerala.
These girls have given me such an amazing pile of movies that I literally wept buckets and am now a confirmed fan of Malayalam cinema.
Arabikatha tops my list for the moment.
Kerala is a very "Communist" State in India. And Indian Communism is very peculiar to India-an eccentric mix of art and literature, of Don Quixotish idealism. Most of the Indian Communists come from high caste families, are not too well off preferring to live off slogans and strikes than to do an honest days work to feed self or family.
Cuba Mukundan is just one such specimen. All he knows is party politics and that too only that of his little town. He is a simple man much loved by all who are acquainted with him. All?
Alas no. He has made his share of enemies in the course of his "protests". And a small bunch of people plot to throw a spoke in his works.
When his father is accused of embezzling money, it is up to him to go out into the real world to pay off the debt. And where do Malayalees go to earn some extra bucks?
Mukundan finds himself adrift in Dubai. Jobs elude. Crooked hearts abound.
Yet the timeless spirit of Indian brotherhood surges to the rescue and strangers with compassionate hearts shelter him.
The tale is entertaining and told with gentleness.
I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to explore films from Kerala.

dear friend/ i too adore malayalam films very much/ i watch malayalam movies regularly (all types)/regarding communist ideology i couldnt come to any conclusion/i wanted to be a communist supporter but in practice is it suitable to india? or to any country?if so why the communist countries couldnt provide everything as they promise in theier books? so i didnt want to break my head for an answer which i couldnt find/simply i quit the idea of becoming a communist/but in many malayalam films i could feel the communist's touch /could it be bcas many directors think in that way? ok let me say lal salam & forget it
I have just now started watching Malayalam films and hope you can suggest more good ones.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts-at least in part the communist ideology has some idealism-let us hope such ideals are refined by the criticism offered in such films.

Dear Unknown, you can't forget it like that. Just see that despite being condemned for being a communist state Kerala chief minister has dealt with Corona crisis better than any other chief ministers in the state. Directors in Kerala have given quality movies which you can't deny.
I suggest a few movies now. After getting response from you I will suggest few more. I will be happy to discuss on these movies. I was never a movie buff though I greatly admired cinema as art. Recently I left my job, now retired I had free time, also because of Corona Lockdown. I used all three months to enrich myself with Malayali movies. I became great fan of these movies, Malayali culture and Kerala people after watching the movies. Bollywood is nowhere close to this cinema as far as quality in direction, acting are concerned.
